What is a Physician Assistant?
Physician Assistants (PA) are trained, licensed, and skilled members of a healthcare team that are qualified to perform tasks that might otherwise be performed by a physician. PAs conduct physical exams, diagnose and treat illness, order and interpret tests, counsel on preventive health care, assist in surgery, and can write prescriptions in the state of New York.
Due to the close working relationship the PA has with the physician, PAs are educated in the medical model designed to complement physician training. Within the physician-PA relationship, physician assistants exercise autonomy in medical decision making and provide a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services.
