Dr. Darren J. Friedman is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at New York University School of Medicine with expertise in surgery of the shoulder, sports medicine, and fracture care. His goal is to provide comprehensive patient care in a kind, thoughtful manner with a focus on the individual. He is an attending surgeon at NYU Medical Center, NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases, NY Downtown Hospital, and Bellevue Medical Center.
Dr. Friedman strives to provide the best quality Orthopaedic care for all of his patients. He specializes in treating complex problems of the shoulder and upper limb and completed the prestigious Harvard Shoulder Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. Dr. Friedman incorporates the latest technology and minimally invasive surgical techniques in his practice. He has extensive experience in arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, arthroscopic shoulder stabilization, arthroscopic nerve decompression, sports medicine, joint preservation, tendon transfers, shoulder replacement, and reverse shoulder replacement. In addition, Dr. Friedman is well trained in the treatment of fractures and completed an AO Trauma Fellowship at The Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. He approaches fracture care in a comprehensive fashion in all of his patients exploring the relationship between patient nutritional status, bone quality, and the biology of fracture healing.
Dr. Friedman has numerous orthopaedic publications, including clinical studies, review articles, and surgical techniques. He has presented his work at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons annual conference. Dr. Friedman was involved with education during his time at Harvard Medical School, instructing residents and medical students in the clinic and operating room.
Dr. Friedman was born and raised in Montclair, NJ. He earned his undergraduate degree from Cornell University and graduated with Honors while competing on the NCAA Division I men's varsity soccer team. Dr. Friedman returned to the Garden State for medical school and earned his M.D. from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey - Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. While in medical school he was awarded the RWJ Summer Research Fellowship for his work in Orthopaedic Surgery. He came to New York City for his training in Orthopaedic Surgery at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital Center - University Hospital of Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, where he served as Chief Resident during his last year. Dr. Friedman furthered his training in Boston as the Harvard Shoulder Fellow and at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City as an AO Trauma Fellow. Dr. Friedman is a Candidate Member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
